I’ve decided to change up the approach to my Fly Poetry section today. Instead of featuring a traditional poem, I wanted to post the lyrics to a song that me to reads like beautiful poetry (Not to mention the fact that it now has a very special meaning to me.)

There are no additional words needed from me on this one … just check out the lyrics, and when you’re done, take a listen to the song for good measure.

The Fly Poetry/Lyrics

You introduce me to life that I’ve never known
When I’m by your side that’s when I feel at home
And my only intent is to make you smile

So believe what I say when I say I’m real

I believe in love … always have, always will. So when I’m moved to write about the highs and lows that love brings, I do it in hopes that it will in turn inspire others to do the same.  A piece that I wrote entitled, “You’ll Miss Me When I’m Gone” (click here to read), triggered a very poignant response from an extremely talented writer that I wanted to share. Beyond the torrid horizons of my soul
Lie deep waters of internal anguish
A whirlpool of bitter thoughts that makes me whole
That simple love or tears cannot tarnish

My soul hungers for something much more real, ill tell you ill give you all of me, & yet you held back still
Who are you, & why are you here, its just my conscious.. reflecting my fear..

I’m carried away with the inconsequential tale
My heart yearns to hear and say
But tales are for story books with childish detail
So my true feelings are suppressed yet another day.

Amidst the ebb and flow of my hidden emotions
And between the crashes of my internal wave
I find myself yearning to let go of my inhibitions
And indulge in love, which I so do crave

I may be a child to certain unmoving eyes
But i partake not in child like things

My heart has held many potent lies
And dwells in the feeling that love alone brings
But like the deep, unknown waters of the farthest oceans

Such is loves face as it eludes me so
Nothingness in a mix of passionate commotions
With nowhere to run, I let myself go

And as I see my heart on my sleeve I ponder…
I want to be known to love, without consequence.

But consequential outcomes makes one wonder
Is love a real emotion, or a mechanism of defense..

All I seek is happiness,
yet time and time again all I find is pain.
I am a magnetic field of woe,
attracting all the hurt and disappointment that can be mustered.
I am a wet, seeping volcano of frustration,
yearning for the most simple of life’s pleasures-
to feel my heart smile.
I am alone,
a sole system of mass confusion and unfulfilled desire.
My words only bring slight tolerance
of each anticipated situation, each cringing memory crouching in me.
Is it a curse to be the strongest?
To endure and continue to survive?
My experience calls me to question
the inevitable ever so evasive “WHY?”

Here’s a video that I thought the group would enjoy. Equal parts funny and real, it’s good to hear a dude talk about the type of love the he wants in his life. I know that I encourage this type of behavior on the regular, so to see it in action … well, it’s good stuff.

One of my favorite poets just blessed me with a new piece that I had to share. For men (myself included), the real challenge with dating is rarely the approach … instead, it’s the execution once we win her heart. Do we truly know how to be “the man,” and be that anchor within a relationship? Well, that’s precisely the question being posed by the author.

Although this piece specifically speaks to what she desires in man, I believe the essence of her words is universal.

So read, digest, and give me a fly critical analysis of how this piece speaks to you. Deal?

I need you to be grounded in spirit,
set in your beliefs
I need you to have faith in yourself,
and the power of what you can’t see
I need to be proud to follow you,
and trust where you will lead
I need you to take ownership of your manhood,
and be a man for me
I need you to stand for something
and to know
your purpose
is not just to get rich
I need your presence in my life
to be my wounded heart’s last stitch.

I’ve said it once, and I’ll continue to say it. There’s no better way to get my motor running than meeting a woman capable of expressing herself to me. Now I’m not talking about the “I love you … I’m mad at you … why won’t you talk to me” type of stereotypical expression that most men (perhaps unfairly) have come to expect from women. This was different, as it inspired me to grab a pad and pen to test the limits of my own expressiveness.

That’s what love should do in my opinion. It not only inspires you to act on your own feelings, but also prompts others to act as well. Check out our featured fly poet below to see what I mean.

A Love Letter About Him…

Nothing even matters
but the touch of his hand
behind my head
supporting all of my ideologies, philosophies
vaguely written policies
all of which are broken by his love for me.
Nothing even matters
but his love, his legs
wrapped around mine
his breath on my spine
giving me strength, renewing my powers
enabling me to cause rivers to flow
storms to brew
passion
to seep into my soul
so it may feed
on the sureness of his truth.

Fly Discussion: While expression is good, it does have its limits. Have you ever been scared away by a person who expressed themselves entirely too much? Or have you been the guilty party? Either way, tell me about it.

Ahhh…..the beautiful fragrance of self expression—there’s nothing like it; nothing more enticing; and certainly nothing more satisfying than a woman poignantly expressing herself to me. So you can imagine that I was immediately drawn to the following piece as soon as I read it. I might need to find her…

Fly
his pulse quickens,
the plot thickens.
and i’m arrested by this development.
made up of lines and elements.
breaking the mold.
over
& over
& over.
and when the flow goes with me,

letting unexposed parts of ME show.
no need for that foreign inhalation.

For The One I Have Yet To Name

You’re my night and the stars are your armor
You’re my match and we can’t break the tie

I watch you grow thinking any day now you will be
Everything you said you would be you will be

A roar breaking the silence

A shell with stories to tell

A Guy Like You

A guy like you, but not quite you, is who I’m looking for.
In theory, you and me, would be compatible,
But the lack of chemistry makes it hard for me
To even pick up the phone and return your call.

I feel there’s something missing,
Like an ingredient to a recipe,
To make ‘this’ complete.
Without being rude,

Yet without being honest,
Perhaps I’m making you believe
That there might be a chance,
A chance for me and you to be.

In theory, it would be.
But you’re just not quite the guy for me.
The guy like you, who’s not quite you, is who I’m longing for.
In reality, him and me are compatible,

And the chemistry we have makes it hard for me
To spend too long without giving him a call.
Although you’re both quite alike
The differences are staggering;

Those differences are the very things
That make me long for his voice
Whenever you call.
His and yours aren’t the same

And the words you utter don’t sound the same,
Despite the both of you saying the same things.
Would it be fair to incessantly compare you to him,
Knowing that you aren’t quite what I’m longing for?

Would it be wiser to be with you,
Knowing that you come close to what can actually be,
Without you actually being the one I want,
Without me enjoying the very thing I longed for?

No, it wouldn’t,
Therefore the feelings you have for me can’t be reciprocated,
Nor can I give you the kind of affection you desire,
In fear that I’d be cheating myself of an emotion

That should be kept in store
For that guy like you, who’s not quite you.
