It’s time to take things back to the good old days … back when love felt a tad bit simpler … back when music made you nod your head in approval instead of scratching it in confusion … back when gas was manageable, and you would drive for hours just to listen to your favorite love songs.

That’s the time I want to go back to…

I keep thinking back to songs by Jodeci, Boyz II Men and Babyface. Songs that no matter the emotion, they just sounded so damn sincere. I don’t care what I was thinking about at the time; I could have been madly in love, or scorned to the point of contemplating murder through osmosis. (You know, so I wouldn’t go to jail.)

So today, I decided to do just that. I dug back into the recesses of my mind to piece together 5 musical moments that played a pivotal role in my understanding of how to express my romantic emotions. The Lesson Learned: The importance of being there for your woman, and letting her know that no matter what is going on in her life that you have her back.

I have long insisted that the power of music knows no bounds. When you take that fundamental truth, and factor in the beauty of love and one dope DJ, then you’ve instantly stumbled upon something absolutely explosive.

The perfect sonic storm that I’m referring to was created when one of my favorite DJs, Lissa Monet, stepped to the plate with the 2nd installment of her romantic mixtape series, “love letters + broken hearts.”

Webster defines heartbreak as “great sorrow, grief, or anguish.” But in my life, I define heartbreak as the one singular event capable of bringing any man to his knees. More harmful than any cut, scrape or bruise could ever be, the damage that’s inflicted by a broken heart should never be underestimated.

The (Not So) Fly Scenario:
Things were going so well. Or so I thought. But if that were really the case, then I wouldn’t have this sharp, agonizing pain in my chest right now, would I? She dropped by my place tonight, and what was initially supposed to be a romantic evening, turned really bad—really fast.

Halfway through our night, I became so overwhelmed by my appreciation for her, that I grabbed her by the hands, and promised that I would either give her the world one day, or die trying.

She looked away…

When she turned back to me, her eyes were watery, and I knew something was wrong. She told me that as much as it hurt her to say it; she was still in love with another man.

Damn…

She continued on by telling me that even though he could never come close to treating her as well I could; she still couldn’t ignore her heart’s gravitational pull towards him.

F*ck…

How am I supposed to pick up the pieces after this one? My mother told me days like this were bound to come, but I didn’t expect it to get this bad.

I need a drink…
