Webster defines heartbreak as “great sorrow, grief, or anguish.” But in my life, I define heartbreak as the one singular event capable of bringing any man to his knees. More harmful than any cut, scrape or bruise could ever be, the damage that’s inflicted by a broken heart should never be underestimated.

So in honor of this universal kryptonite, I thought I’d give the floor to one of my favorite DJs, (DJ Lissa Monet) and let her express the sinking lows of lost love with her latest mixtape, “Love Letters & Broken Hearts.”

The (Not So) Fly Scenario:
Things were going so well. Or so I thought. But if that were really the case, then I wouldn’t have this sharp, agonizing pain in my chest right now, would I? She dropped by my place tonight, and what was initially supposed to be a romantic evening, turned really bad—really fast.

Halfway through our night, I became so overwhelmed by my appreciation for her, that I grabbed her by the hands, and promised that I would either give her the world one day, or die trying.

She looked away…

When she turned back to me, her eyes were watery, and I knew something was wrong. She told me that as much as it hurt her to say it; she was still in love with another man.

Damn…

She continued on by telling me that even though he could never come close to treating her as well I could; she still couldn’t ignore her heart’s gravitational pull towards him.

F*ck…

How am I supposed to pick up the pieces after this one? My mother told me days like this were bound to come, but I didn’t expect it to get this bad.

I need a drink…

If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know that I’ve featured Sara Bareilles’ “Gravity” as a past Fly Lyrics selection. But even now, the song continues to resonate with me, as countless readers still struggle with the tough task of breaking free from the clutches of an old flame. “Set me free,” is what they all seem to be helplessly crying out in their emotional letters to me.

The raw emotion shown throughout this rendition of “Gravity” tangibly displays the pain and frustration of being held down by a former love that just won’t let you go. If you can relate to Bareilles’ struggle, then I’m sure this video will strike a lasting chord with you.
