Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky and Mike … If I love the girl who cares who you like?” And with those words, Ralph Tresvant cemented his place as one of my all-time favorite love philosophers. Ok, “philosopher” may be a strong word, but you have to be willing to look past the source to embrace the message.

Since Mondays are usually so hectic for us all, I felt the need to program in a much-needed break—a moment for you to breathe, take a load off, and reflect back on some of music’s most poignant expressions of love. Starting today, we’ll feature a new (but really old) video each week and celebrate its ability to capture the true essence of love and relationships. First up is Jon B.’s “They Don’t Know.”

I was scrolling through my iPod this morning and stumbled across Jodeci’s “Cry For You.” Now I have to admit, when the song first came out, I thought it was dope (even though I probably wasn’t old enough to really understand its meaning.) But after a quick listen today, my perspective on the quality of its message has officially changed.

We all come from different backgrounds, which I’ve come to both understand and appreciate. It’s those same differences that make this world so great, and what ultimately creates the spice within our romantic relationships. But no matter how different we are, or what we may believe in, we all experience tough periods in our lives—especially in the area of love.

I know you weren’t expecting this from me today, but I really need to say this. We’ve been friends for a while now, and I’ve been here each and every time a guy has taken your heart and abused it. And to be perfectly honest with you, I’m tired of it.

When I think about the definition of love in its purest form, my mind often drifts to Virtue’s “Nothing Ever Mattered.” Pay close attention to the lyrics as they paint a vivid portrait of how true love should feel when you first encounter it.

I woke up to “her” this morning, knowing in my heart that I wasn’t supposed to be there. My heart had left the relationship weeks ago, and had taken up it’s rightful place with you. The rest of me needs to be there as well.

You asked me the other day what I wanted in a woman, and I didn’t have an answer at the time. But it wasn’t like I was completely out of touch with my feelings … I just wanted to take some time to really grapple with the idea of what my perfect woman would look like.

I love you … but of course, you already know this. What you might not know is that I often struggle to discover new ways to express how much I care. I’d normally just buy you something, but that feels too superficial and predictable for the moment.
