Word on the street is that she’s mad at you again. At this point, you probably have a better chance at degreasing Jermaine Jackson, than you do at gaining her forgiveness. When it comes to women, I get it. From an early age, I have always known how to express my feelings in a way that was both crystal clear, and that spoke directly to the sincerity by which they were said.

I have that down pat.

It’s because of this gift that I often find myself growing increasingly frustrated when I’m unable to express the love that I have for God with that same level of conviction. I find it a bit ironic that I get tongue-tied and flustered—especially when you consider that it was God who gave me this gift of expression in the first place.

I sometimes find myself just looking up at the heavens with an exasperated look that says, “I don’t know how to phrase this perfectly, but I just want you to know that I love you.”

It’s that same type of hesitation that hamstrings many of us when it comes to expressing our true feelings to our loved ones. We torture ourselves into believing that if it’s not JUST RIGHT, then they won’t accept it.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth…

In my case, I’ve come to learn that as long as my words were sincere, then God would welcome them with open arms.  The same goes for you, and your expressions of love. It’s time to push away the anxiety, and let the purity of your feelings lead the way.

One of my favorite singers, Mali Music, figured this out long before me, and he offers a great example in one of the most heartfelt love songs that I have ever heard in my life. I just couldn’t let the day pass without me sharing my thoughts as well as this song.

I could spin the love and relationship wheel, and whatever it landed on, I’m sure the topic would be something that is both timely and sorely needed by a reader of this column. But before I submerge myself into love’s treacherous waters, I’d like to begin my day by expressing my unconditional love, respect and adoration for the One who gives me life, and who blessed me with this unique gift of expression in the first place.

On several occasions, I’ve tried to adequately express how grateful I am to be loved by such an awesome God. As hard as I try though, I’m never able to find words that are as strong or as compelling as I need them to be. When that happens, all I can say is, ‘” I Love You,” and pray that the sincerity of the words shines through.

So before I even attempt to tackle today’s most pressing relationship issues, allow me this moment to spend some time with my first love.

Thankfully, there’s enough good music out here to last me for a lifetime. An excellent example of music that pays it forward by inspiring others comes from up-and-comer Frank Ocean. If you haven’t listened to his mixtape then you’ve been doing your ears a huge disservice (download here)

He has one song in particular that has really been speaking to me lately. It even forced to me to take a long hard look at the things that I believe in. As it pertains to love, I believe the following:

I believe that God has a unique plan for my life—one that involves me encouraging others to engage in the purest forms of love.

I believe that there is a special woman out there for me.

I believe that for every one of my flaws, there is a woman who is willing to both accept and help me overcome them.

I believe that when it comes to love, both men and women make things unnecessarily hard.

I believe that the pain of a broken heart is only temporary.

I believe that we should all experience heartbreak one time, just so we can truly understand the pain we inflict on others.

But most importantly, I believe in love.

Simple enough, right?

Loneliness…

It’s an emotion that’s never really welcomed, but sometimes needed. Moments in life arise where it’s actually healthy to experience the emptiness of having no one in your life. In those painfully uncomfortable moments, you’re granted the solitude to reconnect with faith, reconnect with life, and reconnect with your unique understanding of who you are and what you want. Embrace that clarity … and embrace all that you can learn from the loneliness.

Right now, do me a favor and close your eyes. Take in this moment, and forever remember it. And when that special someone comes along, appreciate them for who they are, and for where you’ve just come from.

Spread My Wings

By now, you’ve either seen or heard about the 52nd edition of the Grammy Awards. Don’t worry though, this piece isn’t designed to relive any of those moments as I’m sure you’ve had your fill. Instead, I wanted to focus on the song that won the award for “Best Female Pop Vocal.”

The song was Beyonce’s “Halo,” and I have to admit that I’ve gained a newfound appreciation for it. I’ve always thought the song was nice, but it wasn’t until Grammy night that I actually soaked in the lyrics.

Here’s my take…

I’m sure we’ve all experienced moments in life where the past has forced us to emotionally block out the rest of the world out. Whether it was a disappointing breakup or a tragic loss, our mind was made up that we were never going to risk being hurt again.

For a while at least, the attempts to keep that wall up were successful, until something … someone happens. Before we know it, that wall has come crashing down, and our life has suddenly been recharged and reinvigorated by the possibility of new love. To me, that’s what “Halo” is about … embracing that moment when Mr. or Mrs. Right comes along—the moment when we finally let our guard down to experience love in its purest form. It’s out there for us; it’s just a matter of both you and I deciding that we’re open to experiencing it.

For my money, “Halo” is a beautiful song with a beautiful love perspective … it deserves to be featured today.

During my time as The Fly Guy, I’ve been fortunate enough to learn many invaluable lessons. The most important of which is this: People don’t always want love advice. Sometimes, they just want to be left to their feelings.

This typically happens during a painful breakup. And while kind words and deeds occasionally help, there’s only so many times that a person wants to hear, “everything will be ok.”

Well today is one of those days where you can vent. So go ahead and be upset if you must, as it’s time to get those feelings out so the healing can officially begin … maybe this song will help.

Heartbreak comes in many forms. And while they’re all painful, the most tragic of them all is the type that’s self-inflicted. To have found true love, only to lose it due to your own foolish actions is a tough pill to swallow. Your existence then becomes consumed with your desire to find answers and to reconcile the matter both internally and with the one that got away.

As soon as I heard “Love Lost” by Trey Songz, I knew that he understood the rawness of this emotion. It’s one that many of us have experienced, and one that some may actually be enduring at this very moment. So listen to the song and reflect on your own “lost love.” Once you’re able tap back into that emotion, you’ll work that much harder to ensure it never happens again.

You’re ingrained in my DNA, and are now officially a part of my being. So it’s only right that I share with the rest of the world my eternal gratitude for one of God’s greatest gifts.

That gift of course, being you.

You’re my earth angel … the one that adds depth and substance to my life … the one that makes me feel like anything’s possible … the one that I would scratch and claw to give the world to … or at least die trying.
