Are Divorce Settlements Fair?

Now that Nas has been ordered to pay Kelis $50k a month in child support payments, the talk has shifted from the broken nature of their relationship to the fairness of divorce courts in how they determine settlement amounts.
From what I’ve read, public opinion seems to be sharply divided on how fair his payments are, with most of the male population finding the amount absurd. Even Method Man and Redman had passionate words on the topic after hearing the exorbitant amount. Check out what they had to say.
My Fly Take: As a community of people (regardless of race), we need to start exhausting all options to find common ground before pulling the divorce card. In my opinion, divorce has become the first option instead of an absolute last resort for couples.
I can tell you this; when Mrs. Fly Guy and I take that step, we are going to enter our marriage with divorce taken off the table. That won’t be an option for us … unless she goes off the deep end, and becomes a serial killer targeting midgets and old 90’s R&B groups. But short of that, we’re going to stick it out, and make things work.
But my personal thoughts on marriage aside, do I feel like the courts went overboard in the case of Nas and Kelis? I do … but if we address the issue of maintaining healthy marriages first instead of taking our frustration out on the courts, then I think we’d find ourselves in a much better position as a community. What are your thoughts?

In the case of Nas, I don’t know that it was fair, but I think it was to teach him a lesson. I’m sure the judge was aware that he showed up at the hospital drunk, and that Kelis spent all her money on the baby and Nas not so much, and unlike most cases his wife, not baby mama is famous, and if she’s pregnant, she’s not able to make money. For a woman to leave 7 months pregnant she must have felt things were bad. I think more than anything that video hurt him. Him announcing the baby born, and his wife was still in labor just makes him seem not trustworthy.
I’m sure down the line the settlement will be readjusted, but for now, the judge is sending a message to Nas, and hitting him where it hurts. I don’t think the $40,000 will stick. As soon as Kelis is an a position to start working the amount will fall.
As a woman, YES the courts favor women more. Women know this and usually use it to their advantage, sometimes women go overboard with it and use it as a weapon. It’s sad but true. There are times, when the guy is a stand up man but the woman wants to break him down for many ’superficial’ reasons and she uses the court to do it. Many times, it’s not even about the child its more about their own venom and allow the child to be in the middle, which I find to be very unfair. In the case of Nas & Kelis, $50k a month is over the top, to say the least. What child needs that much $$ on a monthly basis??!!?!?! That money is more for her and to maintain her lifestyle and if that’s the case then she should be able to maintain that herself, she is making money isn’t she?!?!!?! Now if a woman with her own career is breaking down her ex like that, it’s cake walk for regular women, nowadays alot of women just seek out to be professional baby mama’s, not for the sake of wanting motherhood but on the strength of having a guarantee monthly allowance that they feel they couldn’t get working a 9-5. And of course, the court reward them with an outragous amount of money, then they are set for life or at least for the next 18 years. Yes the court really needs to look at these cases instead of basing them off battle of the sexes!!!
How much damn money does it take to raise a child these days? Child support used to be just about making sure your kids had the essentials to live….now child support is used to make sure they have Jordans and Louis Vuitton purses for every day of the week.
That’s bullshit….and if Kelis wants to live the lavish lifestyle, maybe she should figure out how to sell records so Jive won’t drop her ass from the label like they did.
Ridiculous! I think it is crazy that this type of unfairness is happening. I believe that the only way to get a fair divorce is through mediation. Ora Schwartzberg, author of “Divorce Mediation from the Inside Out,” and mediation practitioner, has a lot of great ideas on how to have a fair/inexpensive divorce while going through a divorce. These techniques should be in every divorce proceeding.
Here’s one of my biggest qualms w/ society today!
How can we have equality amongst the sexes when women unfairly get the upper hand?
We can’t. We shouldn’t play favorites here. Doing so only furthers aberrant behavior and fuels this tug of war.
And if we get into corrupt, abberant behavior, Teas hit it right on the head with the “Pro Baby Mama” job description. I know a couple and it’s sad to see a life brought into the world with no thought put into how much effort it actually takes to make a productive member of society. Actually, let me rephrase that… How much effort it actually takes to produce a CONSTRUCTIVE member of society.
