I’m not going to bore you with the three millionth review of Usher’s latest album, “Here I Stand.” Instead, I thought I’d share with you a few of my favorite cuts from the album, as well as give you my own interpretation of what they mean. I hope you enjoy my perspective. (But even if you don’t, feel free to still act like you do.)
Note: My song selection is based solely on its relevance to love and relationships. So if Usher decided to feature a song on this album that deals with positive things like; uplifting the black community, boosting a sagging economy, or lowering gas prices, then I simply didn’t want to hear it, since it absolutely could not make this list. I’m sorry Ursh. But a man has to stand for something right?
The Song- Before I Met You
Key Lyrics:
I was a hustler and a player girl before I met you
I’d drink a lil’ something then hit a lil’ something (before I met you)
But how you made a difference, ooh look what I’ve been missing
You got my life together and I thank you forever
Fly Interpretation:
In case you didn’t know, I used to be a man whore. In fact, I can’t even remember the number of women I’ve slept with in the past … yeah there’s been that many.
But I think it’s time for me to stop playing around and finally settle down. After all, I can’t keep up this current pace. If I did, then I’d likely end up being the old man in the club—and neither one of us wants that right? But hey, now that you’ve come along, that won’t even be an issue anymore. Talk about perfect timing.
Listen:
The Song- Here I Stand
Key Lyrics:
No matter how far I go
And no matter how long it takes
No one or nothing can change
Forever yours here I stand
Fly Interpretation:
The entire world thinks that I’m going to mess this one up. Hell, even I have doubts about how truly faithful I’m capable of being. But all in all, I’m committed to making this thing work with you. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me since All 4 One broke up. So even if it takes me a long time to figure this commitment thing out, or even if my eye occasionally strays and you catch me checking out your hairdresser Stacy; know that I don’t mean anything by it, and that I truly love you. I’ll get it together eventually, and stand with you until the end of time … Here I Stand (or here I will be standing at some point…just hold that spot for me.)
Listen:
The Song- Lifetime
Key Lyrics:
I used to think that it was hopeless
And that I should just give it up
But I couldn’t stop until I found myself a good girl to be in love with
I checked every state and city and looked all around the world
And I’m proud to say that my search ends here
Cause your one in a million to me and I can’t let you go
Fly Interpretation: I literally tried to get with every woman possible. And I searched and searched and searched … and then I searched some more. I’ve finally come to the conclusion that you’re as good as it gets baby. And believe me…I’ve been with some good ones. Why just last year alone I …wait never mind. Just know that I’m sure about you and I. I’m absolutely positive that I want to spend the rest of my life with you.

HAHAHA! That was pretty funny. I love the album too. Not as good as Confessions, but I still love it.

LMAO @ “best thing that’s happened to me since All 4 One broke up.”
Now that’s comedy!

You are a trip. I can’t wait until you critique Ne-yo’s upcoming album. I know you are going to have some things to say about that one.
The Fly Guy
Oh yeah, I’m definitely going to come with it for Shaffer “Ne-Yo” Smith

I had low expectations for this album after I heard “Love in this Club” and “Same Girl.” But, I’ve been listening to it all day and I have to admit I like it, specifically the midtempo and slow jams.
The Fly Guy
Yeah Jenee, the album is definitely saved by the slow and mid-tempo songs. And I agree that the cuts you mentioned (”Love in this Club” and “Same Girl”) are pretty underwhelming.
But I definitely enjoy the title track, “Here I Stand.” A lot actually.
Reggie Boy
Good One, FG. Its a good mature album. But I still get queasy when I realize that Usher is singing to Tameka…Such a better visual when it was Chilli.

WOW! This is actually my first time i have heard any other song off his new album, but the couple of tracks i did hear, thay sound pretty good. Job well done to Usher!
The Fly Guy
@erik0829,
yeah these songs are pretty dope.
@Reggie Boy,
Isn’t crazy how most people feel that way. It’s kind of crazy that we are on this man’s wife this hard. I guess she’s doing something right though to keep him..whether isn’t being a good listener, or a good blackmailer…lol
