The Confession

Dear Fly Guy,

I have to be honest with you. I really feel like you’ve been speaking directly to me in your series on commitment. I never thought I suffered from commitment anxiety until I started viewing it from your perspective. I guess my father didn’t exactly provide a great example of what commitment was all about throughout my childhood. He always had a woman on the side. I knew it. My mother knew it. Hell, the whole neighborhood knew it. To this day it just seems natural for me to pursue multiple women, even when I’m “committed” to someone. But now that I’m older, I don’t want to follow in my father’s footsteps anymore. So I guess my question to you is how can I break this cycle Fly Guy?

Darius

Dear Darius

We’ve never met, but you certainly gained my respect with the honesty you displayed in your letter. The way you cleared your conscience reminds me of the time I went out for drinks with Diddy and he confessed he’d never actually used Proactiv. So just like he wanted to “preserve his sexy” in those infomercials, your honesty should now allow you to preserve the integrity of any future relationship. Honesty has always been a vital part of commitment, and your admission is definitely a step in the right direction. Don’t be so hard on yourself though Darius. It’s not easy being exposed to a particular parental behavior your entire life and not have it affect you. Take me for instance. My mother is an elementary school principal, and thanks to her emphasis on literacy, I’ll probably never be able to engage in a meaningful conversation with Fantasia. I’ll make you a deal though. If you can commit yourself to pushing past your father’s influence when it comes to relationships, then I’ll do my best to overcome my issues with illiterate pop stars. Do we have a deal? Keep me posted on your progress.
